How Strong is Tempered Glass?

Tempered Glass is three to five times stronger than non-tempered glass and ten times more resistant to changes in temperature.

The strength of glass is, to a large extent, unpredictable. Since temepered glass cannot be recut after it is tempered, we often have to break it to get it in the dumpster. Sometimes we'll hit it with a hammer four or five times before it breaks. Other times it breaks fairly easily.

But if you hit the glass with something soft, such as a human body, tempered glass will bend an incredible amount and not break. To prove that we performed the following experiment.

The glass is 3/8" thick clear tempered. There is a large notch in the glass as well as a 3/4" Hole. These things will greatly reduce the strength on non-tempered glass.
We supported the ends of the glass with wood blocks.
I wasn't positive I could stand on it. As far as I knew I was the first human ever to attempt such a death defying feet with my feet. So I prepared my myself for the sudden drop to the concrete if the glass exploded and I stepped onto the middle of the glass.
The glass began to bend but it was too late to turn back now. My full weight was on the glass. It bent downward under the tremendous stresses, but it held.
The audience gasped in amazement. "Dave, you are so brave," They said in unison.
I seemed to be in no danger. Soon I became confident enough to proceed with our scientific testing.
