Standoffs for Glass Railings

Heavy Duty Standoff Bases with Caps
For 1/2 and 3/4" Tempered Glass Railings. No Posts required.
Designed to work with a Cap Rail or Hand Rail.
NEW DESIGN: Step Down Standoff with shoulder to make installation on sheet rocked walls easier.
Drill 1 3/4" Hole in sheet rock. The shoulder hides the edge of the hole.
Custom Order by sheet rock thickness and other details. Washers are clear, not black as shown.
304 Stainless is standard. 316 available on request.
These standoffs are similar to the 2" Standoff for Furniture, but beefier cap and more expensive.
This photo is from the manufacturer. Notice that this railing doesn't follow their recomendations on the right panel. The handrail makes it strong.
Here's Vicki standing next to a railing we just finished. I hope I can get a picture when the house is completed someday. There is a tempory cap rail on the glass, but if we took it off you would see that we were able to get the panels to line up very well.
These standoffs have 3/8-16 threads all the way through. We had these standoffs custom made with the sheet rock shoulder. They ended up being cheaper than than the stock item, but there was a one month lead time. We installed the through bolts by welding a plate on the back. This way the painters could finish the sheet rock before the standoffs got there and we didn't hold any one up.

ADVANTAGES of our CUSTOME MADE STANDOFFS: Two caps are included with each base. The caps look identical from the outside. But one has a large shoulder and the other has no shoulder. Use the large shoulder when the hole is perfectly aligned. Use the no-shoulder version when there isn't room for the large shoulder. This really makes this system possible.
3/8" -16 threads are standard. 1/2" would be no extra charge, however, this would add more difficulty than strength.

More than enough clear plastic 1mm thick gasket washers are also included. This allows the installer to adjust the top edge of the glass for perfect alignment. You don't have to rely on the cap rail or hand rail to bend the glass into position.

The clear plastic washers stick to the glass and metal almost like adhesive. The shear strength is high. 1mm thick is thin enough to allow adjustments.

However, it is still extremely important that the stringer is installed plumb and that it is very strong. The engineers say these are not designed for wood stringers. They are a solid block of stainless, how much designing went into that? We through bolt to the stringers and use a cap rail and or hand rail. This is as strong as any railing attached to the stringers. Those crazy engineers.
Note about glass railings with no cap rail on decks. I have never heard of a glass railing with no cap rail exploding and some one falling to their death or injury. But it obviously could happen. Tempered glass rarely spontaneously explodes. Generally something hard like a diamond ring breaks the surface on an edge, which would be exposed if there were no cap rail, and then the glass explodes. If there was a cocktail party on the deck, many people could fall and/or spill their drinks. A deck with a glass railing and no cap rail looks dangerous. It looks like the owner is an idiot. I don't think stupid is a good look. Is that too harsh?

Measuring the glass, especially for stairs is difficult. Here's what we've found. (page coming soon)
